Tortula ruralis subsp. ruraliformis (twisted moss)

Curls its pleated leaves against the stem in dry conditions, leaves uncurl when hydrated

Twisting and untwisting of leaves helps to throw off loose sand grains

Very tolerant of high temperatures (<60°C)

Can shut down metabolic activity for months but will recover almost instantly when wetted
